Jacob Chugg

I'm a Mechanical Engineering student at Brigham Young University, expecting to graduate in April 2028 with a 3.69 GPA. What drew me to this field in the first place is the hands-on side of it — I like that a design eventually has to survive contact with a mill, a mass-property study, and someone actually using the thing, not just look good in a CAD viewport. These days that's pulled me toward aerospace/defense and mechanical design work in particular.

My experience spans CAD and parametric modeling, manufacturing, engineering documentation, and embedded/electromechanical systems. I'm SolidWorks CSWA certified, and I like seeing a project all the way through — from a toleranced drawing and a BOM into manual machining, CNC-oriented design, sand casting, and MIG welding. When a project calls for code instead of chips, I write it in Python, C/C++, or Arduino.

Right now that means designing a parametric combustion-chamber assembly as a Research Assistant in BYU's Mechanical Engineering Department, and manufacturing a putter of my own design — a mallet head built around mass-property studies rather than trial and error, mostly because I wanted mine to actually roll straight.

Beyond the Shop

I served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines, where I picked up Tagalog — well enough that I came home and taught it full-immersion at the Provo MTC, and I'm now putting a similar kind of teaching to use as a Calculus TA at BYU. I'm an Eagle Scout, I walked on at cornerback for Utah Football for a season, and outside of the shop I'm usually either on a golf course or in the weight room.
