Jacob Chugg

I'm a Mechanical Engineering student at Brigham Young University with a 3.69 GPA, and I expect to graduate in April 2028. What I enjoy most about engineering is taking an idea from a CAD model to something that can actually be manufactured, assembled, and used. I like the design work itself, but I especially enjoy working through the details like dimensions, tolerances, materials, mass properties, and manufacturing constraints that turn a concept into a real part or system.

That interest has led me toward mechanical design and the aerospace and defense industry, while also giving me the chance to work on a pretty wide range of projects. I've designed parametric assemblies and engineering drawings in SolidWorks, manufactured parts through machining and other shop processes, and built electromechanical systems using Arduino and C/C++. I'm CSWA certified and enjoy projects where I can combine CAD, analysis, manufacturing, and testing rather than working on just one piece of the process.

Right now, I'm working as a Research Assistant in BYU's Mechanical Engineering Department, where I designed a parametric combustion-chamber assembly for a larger research project. Outside of that work, I've been designing and manufacturing my own mallet putter, one of my favorite projects because I've been able to take it all the way from early CAD iterations and mass-property studies to drawings and CNC manufacturing.

Beyond the Shop

Outside of engineering, I spent two years as a volunteer missionary in the Philippines, where I learned Tagalog and later taught it full-time at the Provo Missionary Training Center, helping prepare new missionaries for assignments in the Philippines. I now work as a Calculus TA at BYU. I'm also an Eagle Scout, walked on to the football team at the University of Utah, and outside of school I’m usually spending time with my wife, golfing, or in the gym.
